Total greenhouse gas emissions

Piraeus Group monitors and manages the impacts it has on the environment and calculates its annual “carbon footprint”. It sets targets to reduce emissions from its operations, lending, and investments.

Total greenhouse gas emissions

For the calculation of Piraeus’s operational footprint and of Piraeus’s financing and investment activities the following emissions have been taken into account:

  • Consumption of heating oil, total refrigerants replaced/ added in the air-conditioning, cooling units, and heat pumps, and fuel consumption of company-owned vehicles (Scope 1), 
  • Consumption of electricity in all buildings and branches, as well as in the Group’s investment properties (Scope 2),
  • Purchased goods and services, fuel and energy related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, waste generated in operations, business travel, employee commuting (Scope 3 cat. 1-14),
  • Equity investments (listed equity and unlisted equity), mortgages, commercial real estate (loans), project finance, corporate loans, sovereign debt (sovereign bonds and sovereign loans), motor vehicle loans, corporate bonds (Scope 3 cat. 15).

Environmental performance

For Piraeus Group

  • Piraeus secured Guarantees of Origin (GOs), certifying that specific amounts of electricity consumed in own premises and within the investment properties portfolio was sourced from renewable energy.

For Piraeus Bank

  • Annual reduction in Scope 2 (location-based) emissions by 38% 
  • Piraeus Bank sources 100% of electricity in its branches and administration buildings from renewable sources (purchase of Certificates of Origin), leading to zero Scope 2 (market-based) emissions
